When a CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Checksum error occurs during startup, it mean that the system has been restored to default factory settings. Which results in changing the time and date, the CMOS contains data related to BIOS and may have been reinitialized. This problem may occur due to the depletion of the CMOS battery or malware attacks. This problem can be fixed by changing the old CMOS battery with new one and it is also possible to fix this problem by re-installing BIOS. This article show you, what are the underlying causes of start-up time and date error and how you can fix them.
1. CMOS Battery
CMOS battery sits in your computer's mother board and provides power to the Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) chip. The CMOS contains data related to system configuration which includes time and date. When the CMOS battery is dead it starts loosing information, which results in changing in the time & date and reset the factory settings.
SOLUTIONS
- CMOS checksum error default loaded.
- CMOS Checksum Bad.
- CMOS MEMORY size WRONG.
- Warning! CPU has been changed please re-enter cpu settings in the CMOS setup and remember to save before you quit.
You are prompted to:
Solution
- Press F1 to Run Setup.
- Press F2 to load default values and continue
To fix this CMOS CHECKSUM ERROR, you need to replace your old battery with new CMOS battery. Replacing your CMOS battery is very easy, just you need to open the case or cabinet of the cpu and find the CMOS battery in mother board as shown in the above picture (1st picture). Check the type of the battery that sits in your mother board, buy it and replace it with the old one. You can also fix the CHECKSUM ERROR by Reinitializing the BIOS.
2. Malware
In few cases your computer may be hijacked by a dangerous virus, which messes the computer's time and rest to default time and date. In short, virus in your computer causes the system time to be incorrect.
To fix this problem, you need to get a good antivirus program which is updated with latest virus definition. But firstly make sure your antivirus is fullversion, so that it can scan and remove the dangerous viruses from your computer. Now install your antivirus program and update it via internet. Restart your computer and select "SAFE MODE", to enter into the safe mode you need to press F8 key, after the interval of 1 second, you will see the display as shown in the picture.
It will display many options, but you need to select "Safe Mode" only and press enter. Soon you will be taken into safe mode. Now run the antivirus and scan your whole computer, the reason i asked you to scan your computer in safe mode is, it is less likely to escape detection and removal.
When your computer loses time or may simply set to the wrong time zone, you will face this problem. Every time when you try to fix the time, it resets itself when you restart your computer. If the minutes are correct and only the hour is incorrect, that’s probably the issue you are dealing with. To fix this problem check the solution below..
